CANDLE contributes to Webinar Building Bridges in Digital Health Innovation: Data, Policy & People

Carola Schulz (empirica) presented 18 November 2025 in the Webinar – Building Bridges in Digital Health Innovation: Data, Policy & People on National Cancer Data Nodes as instruments for privacy‑preserving cancer data sharing and their role in European digital health ecosystems Carola higlighted how National Cancer Data Nodes contribute to the three key topcis of the webinar:

Data: specificities of cancer data (multi‑modality, guidelines for standard use)

Policy: connection between national and EU‑level policies (European Health Data Space, EU Mission on Cancer, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan)

People: benefits of NCDNs for both direct users (research organisations, policymakers) and indirect beneficiaries (patients and citizens)

Another core focus was on “Cancer Data Sharing with Privacy”, showing how National Health Data Catalogues, Data Access Applications Management Solutions and Secure Processing Environments can work together to enable federated analysis without centralising sensitive data, while linking to Health Data Access Bodies. Carola introduced the CANDLE Maturation Model and Resource Kit as practical tools for Member States to assess their current practices and design implementation roadmaps for privacy‑preserving data sharing – and more.

In the subsequent panel discussion with Evangelos Markatos, Antonino Angi, Miriam Cabrita, moderated by Aleksandar Jevremovic, the panle linking these topics to data federation, cyberatacks and explanability of AI models.

Big thanks to the panel and SHINE 2Europe and Carina Dantas for the excellent organisation!
